Let's be blunt. Many of the Starbound default ships leave a lot to be desired. Layouts, overall look, distance from teleporter to command console, or just the absurd requirements to upgrade them for little gain.
To this end, Frackin Universe has a Build Your Own Ship system that upon choosing, will allow you to be the master of your entire ship. Replace the entire thing, fly in a tiny hut made of mud & grass. Or build something so massive it takes up the entire shipworld. Go wild. Build wild.
Choosing BYOS when starting the game allows you to build and design your own ship and choosing Frackin' Ship lets you modify the template, but also build normally around the pre-designed ship.
BYOS requires you to research Spacefaring and Vehicles and craft and place an STL Drive inside the ship to move between planets.
To start jumping between stars, you will need to research Faster than Light, craft and place a Small FTL Drive inside your ship.
Craft boosters like the Small STL Booster and Small FTL Booster and place them on your ship to make it move faster. Bigger boosters will reduce your ship's mass.
This also allows you to increase the fuel capacity by building Fuel Tanks, Fuel Purifiers and crew members that decrease fuel cost.
1. Ship Spawn Teleporter, FTL Fuel Hatch, Captain's Chair, FTL/STL Drive and S.A.I.L Interface should be placed on your ship. It might work without the S.A.I.L Interface, but won't do much good without the rest.
2. If you have a spare Upgrade Module, consider building a Crew Bed or Crew Deed. Ship Crew can provide huge benefits, e.g. immunity to debilitating effects, faster research speeds and bait for enemies.
3. Leave some space for boosters - they are definitely worth the resources for significantly faster ship movement.
4. For faster research, more space for fully automated mega-factories and less lag, it is generally advised not to use the ship as your main base of operations.
5. Some objects increase Ship Mass, which in turn makes it burn more fuel, although all objects that do it include the ship mass increase in their descriptions.
Tabula Rasa, Barren, Oceanic and Eden planets are good choices for a base. Remember, that higher Fauna Threat gives a higher research boost.
1. Place background walls where you want gravity. No walls behind your character make them float in zero G and suffocate.
2. Build a Gravity Normalizer if you want to do some work outside your ship without placing walls everywhere.
3. If you find yourself in zero G, you can always BEAM DOWN.
4. Any spear with the Rocket Spear alternate attack, Core Spear, Air Dash Tech, Gyrostabilizer will help you move around outside the ship. Although, be careful with the Air Dash.
5. The Physics Field tech costs no energy to use at all on your ship. Prioritize acquiring it, as it will let you fly freely in zero-G given you have breath immunity.
6. The S.A.I.L Interface includes an option to make the player suffocate and experience zero G whenever the room isn't completely enclosed. The option is OFF by default.
Q: Can I switch back from BYOS to a default ship? Or the other way around?
A: No. BYOS is a one way trip. Once you have chosen one or the other, that's what you've got. So slow down, think it over, and choose wisely.
Q: I didn't get a choice. Give me a refund.
A: That's not a question. But basically, not all species are supported by default in the BYOS system. You'll need a patch, or to make a patch.
Q: How do I make this less slow?
A: There's a Ship Component Assembler. As you progress, you'll unlock better thrusters (boosters), warp cores, and more.
Q: Can I move the spawn point?
A: Yes. But you'll need to pay attention to the teleporter you're building. It should be the Ship Spawn Teleporter.
